I. Interlocking Access Matting Features…
As the customer, you have a number of matting and site solutions from which to choose. Naturally, we prefer that Little Guy Oilfield Rentals is the first that comes to mind when you need a helping hand.
The way we look at it, doing business is a two-way street. It’s all about relationships forged in trust, competence, interaction, and mutual respect. Obviously, we’re eager to earn your business. So, why would you want to work with us?”
- Cost Efficient Solutions: Time and money. Both are limited resources that can be spent any number of ways, with a variety of consequences. Our on-site operating protocols and hard-wearing matting systems are a safe, efficient way of getting the job done right - on time and right on the money - every time.
- Top Drawer Service: We want you to feel as though you’re the only customer we have. From your first call to us to end of the project, you’ll get the kind of service you expect and deserve without having to ask for it. We’re on call whenever you need a helping hand,
24/7 365 days a year.
- Safety Certified: We take the well-being of our employees and their families very seriously. Health and safety on the jobsite is everyone’s business. All of our people are expected to comply with health and safety regulations to protect not only themselves, but their co-workers, environment and the general public. That commitment is backed by a Certificate of Recognition issued February 2005.
- Durable Construction: We never use nails, screws, cables, or bolts that lead to weak joints, soft spots, and punctured tires. Once in place, repairs are never needed under normal use conditions. No slipping, no separation. Just install it and forget it.
- Reliable Solutions: Full perimeter interlocking means a solid final assembly that won’t slip, slide, or otherwise fall apart under traffic pressure. One mat bridges another to evenly disperse weight and they’ll separate only when you want them to.
- Zero-Disturbance Installation: The condition or eco-sensitivity of your site is never an issue. Our personnel and equipment work from the topside of each newly installed matting surface. As they bridge their way across the project area the combined weight of the entire assembly is always evenly distributed as it comes together. Fragile topsoil and vegetation lying beneath is protected and undisturbed.

III. Access Matting Installation
Little Guy Oilfield Rentals Inc. specializes in the transportation, service, installation and removal of our interlocking access matting systems.
On a typical 10 hour day our three-man crew can lay and install up to 150 interlocking mats. This, of course, depends on the indigenous ground conditions and whether the trucks carrying the matting can match the pace.
The location crew consists of two operators and one laborer. Our rubber tired excavator does the actual laying of the matting and most jobs are made a lot easier because of it. With a reach of more than 20 feet, its able to simply swing around and pick up the mats while remaining in the same spot.
The loader, equipped with a mat grapple, unloads the trucks and feeds the excavator with a pair of 2800 lb. mats at a time. With each piece firmly in place the loader “leap frogs” ahead of the excavator to repeat the process. Before you know it, the job is done and you’re on the road! (back to top)
IV. Non- Interlocking Access Matting Features…
Tundra Heavy Duty Access Matting
The second and newest addition to our fleet is the non-interlocking “Tundra” access mat. Fabricated of granulated recycled rubber tires, each mat is compressed and high-pressure molded to form a durable surface that’s ideal for tracked equipment.
Tundra access mats are designed to serve a variety of applications, load sizes, and ground conditions. The true test of any access mat is its ability to transfer the weight of a vehicle or heavy load over a large surface area, thus avoiding submersion in unstable terrain.
Molded rubber products with a length greater than a few feet are inherently flexible. However, Tundra access mats have a built-in torsion rigidity system to provide superior strength, load capacity, and weight distribution capabilities of the recycled rubber.

In addition to outstanding load distribution performance, Tundra access mats have “memory,” a feature that enables instant recovery after a heavy load or force has been removed. The ability to do so significantly reduces permanent structural damage, which is a key down fall to other less resilient materials.
Access mats constructed of rigid materials such as oak, poplar, and plastic commonly rock or creep out of place under traffic. The torsion-reinforced elastic characteristics of the rubber also enable the mat to conform to uneven installation surfaces. This feature enhances adhesion with the underlying ground and greater reduces the need to interlock the access mats in order to keep them in place. (back to top)

V. Equipment Rentals…
Caterpillar 930-G
Our “Caterpillar 930-G” Wheel Loaders comes equipped with Bucket & Pipe top-clamp grapple forks. This new workhorse replaces the Cat IT28.
The 930-G’s new single piece, boom style lift arm gives the handler greater versatility and stability over two arm loaders. The single boom lift arm means that visibility of critical areas like bucket corners and fork tips are a cinch. Improved vision means improved safety, and fewer pricey mishaps.
Daily Rate: $475.00, inc. grapple/pellet forks and chains Full Technical Specifications on the Cat 930-G are available on PDF . Click here.
(back to top) VI. PTAC Study: Seasonal Load Leveling
A study was conducted by Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) in conjunction with DeepBlue Associates Inc. The findings were presented in Calgary on October18th, 2005 as a business case entitled “Level Best: Drilling Seasonal Load Leveling.”
The study examined the various benefits of load leveling in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) with respect to drilling costs, safety performance, human resources, and rig utilization. In essence, the mandate was to explore ways of reducing winter drilling activity by spreading it more evenly throughout the year.
The subject of Access Matting Systems and the business in general was explored in the paper, making particular reference to the manner in which companies like Little Guy Oilfield Rentals are rising to the occasion in meeting the rising needs of the industry. Here are a handful of excerpts from the study that might be of interest to you…
- Interlocking Access Mats are a technology being used throughout the WCSB. For companies looking to reduce or eliminate the effects of inclement weather on drilling activity, particularly heavy precipitation that can occur in the spring and summer months, access mats appear to be providing a solution.
- Access Mats allow for more confidence that drilling deadlines can be met, as they help ensure that inclement weather will not affect drilling schedules. Facilitating activity on soft ground, access mats provide a stable base on which equipment can travel and operate. One operator we spoke with compared mats on mud to snowshoes on snow – “it just makes getting around easier.”
- The biggest benefits touted by another operator include the ability to extend the drilling season, the ability to leave a smaller footprint, and a cleaner and safer work environment. He compared the use of access mats to being as comfortable and clean as working on a paved lease or a paved road.
- Interlocking Access Mats are noted as helping to “change the way Canada’s energy industry operates when temperatures climb and frozen land turns into waste-deep muck.”
- According to operators using access mats to perform non-winter drilling, mats have been very effective at extending the drilling season. One operator interviewed estimated that 40% of his company’s drilling operations now include mats extensively in the western Alberta foothills, in northern Alberta, and anywhere else if wet conditions exist.
- Any area within the WCSB with soft or wet ground is a good candidate for mats. Interlocking Access Mats are noted to be most useful when a company is drilling multiple wells in one area. In these situations, mats make the most economic sense.
- There is little doubt that Interlocking Access Matting can help companies with year-round access to well sites. The technology works, and success stories exist. The use of mats has allowed a major operator in the WCSB to move its 1,000-tonne rigs over sponge-like muskeg in a rain-swamped area between the northern borders of Alberta and B.C.
Operators are pursuing a number of innovative load leveling practices, and season-extending technologies are gradually rising to the challenge. The road mat business, in particular, is fully engaged in meeting the rising needs of industry. (back to top) |
